چکیده

The losses to supply chains from disasters such as the Tohuku earthquake in Japan and Thai floods in 2011 arise not only through direct damage at firms, but also from the interruption of normal operations due to lack of supply; that is, due to disruption cascades from suppliers in the adjacent tiers and beyond. To curtail such losses, firms can make ex ante investments in mitigation and recovery strategies. However, given the complexity of the network topology, the assessment and mitigation of disruption risk pose formidable managerial challenges. In this paper, we address these challenges by analyzing an investment game for a given network structure, in which firms’ investments in risk mitigation are best responses to their suppliers’ investments. We determine the equilibrium payoffs in both decentralized and centralized settings and find that, under either setting, the investment and payoff of a firm typically depend only on the properties of its extended local neighborhood; that is, up to its tier-2 suppliers, thus making knowledge of the remaining network structure redundant. We also characterize the efficiency gap (difference between centralized and decentralized payoffs) in terms of the network structure. To resolve the efficiency gap, we then exploit the network topology to propose a coordinating payment-transfer mechanism that induces firms to make efficient investments in a decentralized manner.

A Fuzzy Based Decision Support System For Supply Chain Disruption Management

Among the supply chain risk types, disruptions that result from natural disasters, sanctions, transportation problems and equipment failure can seriously disrupt or delay the flow of material, information and cash. The aim of this research was to propose a hybrid model for disruption management, which is the process of achieving plans or strategies to reduce the expenses incurred by the disrupt...

A Robust Reliable Forward-reverse Supply Chain Network Design Model under Parameter and Disruption Uncertainties

Social responsibility is a key factor that could result in success and achieving great benefits for supply chains. Responsiveness and reliability are important social responsibility measures for consumers and all stakeholders that strategists and company managers should be concerned about them in long-term planning horizon. Although, presence of uncertainties as an intrinsic part of supply chai...

Stock-out Prediction in Multi-echelon Networks

In multi-echelon inventory systems the performance of a given node is affected by events that occur at many other nodes and in many other time periods. For example, a supply disruption upstream will have an effect on downstream, customer-facing nodes several periods later as the disruption "cascades" through the system. There is very little research on stock-out prediction in single-echelon sys...

Impact of port disruption on transportation network

Port, as a critical facilitator in international trade and logistics, plays a unique role in global supply chain activities. Maritime ports are exposed to many disruption sources such as natural disasters, labour strikes and terrorism. Disruptions in port can have a wide range of potential negative impact on its transportation networks; while sometimes also benefit other ports in close proximit...

Propagation of Cascades in Complex Networks: From Supply Chains to Food Webs

A general theory of top-down cascades in complex networks is described which explains two similar types of perturbation amplifications in the complex networks of business supply chains (the ‘bullwhip effect’) and ecological food webs (’trophic cascades’). The dependence of the strength of the effects on the interaction strength and covariance in the dynamics as well as the graph structure allow...
